Background

Giacomo Morselli was born in Bologna, Italy, in 1994. He obtained his MSc in Photochemistry and Molecular Materials in 2018, followed by a PhD in Nanoscience for Medicine and the Environment (2022), both from the University of Bologna. His doctoral research, conducted under the supervision of Professor Paola Ceroni, focused on the synthesis and photophysical characterization of hybrid organic–inorganic quantum dots for applications in bioimaging and solar energy conversion.

After a one-year research fellowship in Bologna working on artificial photosynthesis, he joined the group of Prof. Oliver Wenger at the University of Basel, where he spent two and a half years studying the synthesis and photocatalytic applications of metal complexes and clusters. As of August 2025, he is a postdoctoral research fellow in the group of Prof. Jonathan De Roo, focusing on the synthesis and photophysical characterization of lanthanide-doped nanoparticles for upconversion.

Outside the lab, Giacomo enjoys science communication, playing volleyball, and passionately defending traditional Italian food. He firmly believes pineapple does not belong on pizza—and if you think Bolognese ragù goes with spaghetti, it’s best we keep things professional.
